Solar off-grid electricity solution is a solar solution that has battery back-up.
In this system, the generated solar energy is stored in batteries. The combination of solar electricity and battery power is used to run specific loads.
Discom’s electricity (GRID electricity) is only used when there is no solar energy and when the battery power is low.

Following is the detailed description of working of solar off-grid electricity solution:

Condition 1:

During the day, when the sun rays are present, solar energy is used to charge the batteries and to operate the load (like TV, AC, Fridge, etc). In this solution, solar power is used to charge the battery and hence DISCOM’s (Grid) electricity is not wasted for this activity.

Condition 2:

When the sun rays are low, then the load is operated using the combination of solar energy and the energy stored inthe batteries. As electricity from this combination is sufficient for the load, DISCOM’s (Grid) electricity is not used.

Condition 3:

When sun rays are not present, the solar panels will not be able to generate the electricity. Hence using the stored energy of batteries, the load can be operated. The system is designed in such a way that only 50% power of batteries will be used while the rest 50% will always be stored for emergency situations.

Condition 4:

When solar energy is not present and the batteries are at 50% capacity, then the off-grid inverter (PCU = PowerConditioning Unit) takes the power from the Grid and hence the load is operated seamlessly.

Condition 5:

In case of sudden power failure /load shedding/breakdown conditions at night, when solar energy is not present, the solar inverter will use the stored 50% energy of the battery to support the load. Hence with the perfect combinationof solar + batteries + grid energy, the load is operated 24 x 7 x 365

HOW TO DESIGN?

1. Get the details of all the loads like TV, fan, light, fridge, AC, motors, etc which need to be operated using the solar off-grid solution.
2. Power rating (wattage) of each electronic/electrical component is required.

3. Duration for which each load needs to be operated. Like, the TV needs to be used for 4-5 hours, the water pump needs to be used for 0.5 hours, etc.
4. Then, the question comes, where do you want to install this solar system. The solar panels can be installed on your roof-top or on the ground (shadow-free area). We need to analyze the available space for the best electricity generation. Other components can be installed on any available wall / free space.

5. We need to calculate your electricity consumption of every month. For this, an electricity bill (of any 1 month) can help us. Also, load shedding/ power cut details will be needed.
